Promoting the UK Immunisation programme is an essential role for Practice Nurses.

This course is ideal for the nurse new to Practice Nursing and /or Immunisations.  It provides current valuable information on the fundamentals of immunisation and links theory to practice using teaching and learning activities that encourage active participation.  Our approach to training includes problem solving and small group work discussing real life scenarios: it covers the full UK routine Immunisation Programme, is very interactive informative and enjoyable.

All the requirements outlined in the National Minimum Standards and Core Curriculum for Immunisation Training recommended by UK Health Security Agency and the Royal College of Nursing (RCN) are met by this workshop.

Those who are new to immunisation wanting to become a competent immuniser.

Those who do not administer vaccines but have been designated a supportive role in immunisation.

Course Information:

Before registering for this workshop participants must ensure they “have a supervisor in practice who is a Registered Health Professional (nurse or doctor) who will have professional responsibility for ensuring the practitioner has met the necessary standards of competency”.

Course participants will also be expected to:

  • Attend the two day workshop
  • Complete the competency assessment tool
  • Administer 30 vaccines under supervision

The aims and objectives of the workshop are to ensure:

  • Patient safety
  • Those who immunise are competent to do so
  • Health professionals provide a high standard of care

Course content includes:

Aims of an immunisation programme/ national policy and schedules

  • Vaccine preventable diseases
  • The immune response / how vaccines work and types of vaccines
  • Communicating with patients
  • Legal aspects of vaccination including Consent: PSDs: PGDs
  • Storage and handling of vaccines
  • Correct administration of vaccines
  • Communicating with patients
  • Recognition and Management of Anaphylaxis and other adverse events
  • Strategies for maximising vaccine uptake

A Certificate of Attendance will be issued on completion of the two-day workshop.

A Certificate of Competence to Immunise will be issued on completion of the Competence Assessment Tool, supervised vaccine administrations and supervisor sign-off.
